Congress Scheduled to Vote on Debt Ceiling Again

We all know that the current administration has increased our debt ceiling over and over again over the past 6 years, and it looks like Congress is going to do it yet again. We all wish we could just say “hey, increase all my card limits so I can just keep spending” but Congress actually gets to do it. This time their deadline is October 1st, so we should probably expect a few more vacations between now and then from our Congressional leaders.

So, how exactly would you and I be affected if they couldn’t come to an agreement and our government actually shut down? Many people think that their lives really wouldn’t be affected much, and for some this may be the case but for others there are quite a few inconveniences to be had.

According to CNN, it is not only costly to shut down, but here are also a few  ways YOU will be affected:

All national parks, zoos and museums will close. Better luck next time if you’ve already booked your flight and hotel to DC, or any other destination where you intended to visit a federally operated attraction.

If you are a federal employee, well I guess you will have plenty of time to finally get around to your spring cleaning because you’re furloughed until further notice.

Although our military would still be working (and protecting you and me) their paychecks would now be coming in the form of IOU’s. They don’t have a choice but to show up for work, so it’s not like they can find another job to pay the bills. This would be really bad for all of our military families. (And a great way for Congress to show their appreciation for their freedoms, right?!)

Even though our government will not be working, they will still be collecting taxes from us. Gosh! I don’t know about you but if I don’t work I certainly don’t get paid, why should they? Oh, that’s right because we let them.

Obamacare will continue its process of implementation. That’s tight, even though this is right in the middle of the debate between Republicans and Democrats; Obamacare is not dependent on the budget process of Congress. Oh joy!

Since the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is government, don’t expect that gun permit to go through any time soon.

Federally funded loans will halt. So, if you are looking to buy a house or get a loan through programs like VA, you will have to wait. If you are a small business in need of a government loan, that too will have to wait. Veterans’ retirement income will not go out either. The only thing that you may still receive is Social Security benefits, since these did go out during the last shut down, but there’s no guarantee here either.

No trash collection in D.C. Why just D.C.? Their budget has to be approved by Congress. Things around the White House might start to get a little smelly…

The American Psyche will probably suffer the most, according to CNN. That makes sense, but we have to remember that we keep voting these people in to office. The country has operated since 2009 without a budget. Could you do that? I know I couldn’t. I, like most of you, have a certain amount coming in, a certain amount going back out and hopefully there’s some left over to save for whatever might come my way next. So the next time there’s an election in your area (hint: they are usually in November) pay attention to who is running and make sure that you go out and vote!
