MRE’s or Meals Ready to Eat were originally designed for military use. They are one of the most versatile food storage products available. MRE’s give you the shelf life you want in food storage with the convenience and taste of everyday meals. All MRE meals are packaged in a triple layer foil and a plastic pouch that have tremendous storage qualities without the need of a can opener. The food is sealed in the pouch and then cooked so that the food is not exposed to air again until the pouch is opened. This process preserves the food in the pouch and maintains its natural moisture in the pouches. See Shelf life Chart
Note: When stored at 60° or lower, no data was collected. Projections are that the 130 months will be extended. -Source: U.S. Army
Note: Time and Temperature have a cumulative effect. For example, storage at 100° for 11 months then removed to storage at 70° would lose one-half of the 70° storage life. Also avoid fluctuating temperatures, in and out of freezing levels. Due to the cumulative effect of time and temperature, a regular rotation of MRE's within 5 to 7 years is recommended.
MRE’s are an easy way to supplement a year supply of dehydrated food storage because they are pre-cooked, non-dehydrated meals. No water is needed, and they taste great hot or cold!
Other Information about MRE's:
- MRE's are pre-prepared food that are packaged in special pouches that allow for long-term storage and, therefore, require no additional preservation. What's more, they don't require you to add water. They are ready to be opened and eaten just as they are.
- MRE's can be eaten cold. They are intended to be an instant food source whether you are in an emergency situation or whether you use them for their convenience in away-from-home activities. Most of the meals will taste better warmed up. If so, you can warm them up in many of the same ways that you warm refrigerated meals. However, they can all be eaten cold if necessary.
- MRE's can be heated various ways. When you are away from home, there are several ways to do this. Remove the MRE pouch from cardboard box and let the pouch sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes. It can also be placed on a warm surface such as a vehicle engine, which naturally heats up with use and retains it warmth for an extended period of time. Another effective method of heating is to place the packet in a pot of hot water when available. There are many other ways you may think of for heating up MRE's, but DO NOT put the foil pouch in a microwave or over an open flame. Remember, MRE's are all precooked, so they can be eaten cold also.
- A wide variety to choose from. MRE's have had many advances over the last few years in the quality of flavor, as well as the variety of food available. If you have never tasted them, now is a great time to try!
